The waters off the southern coast of Jeju Island offer many attractions to divers. There are soft coral gardens and vertical walls, caverns and caves, white sandy bottoms and reefs of volcanic rock. Huge kelp forests grow from the bottom to the surface during the cold season. The fish life is a unique mix of tropical and cold water species. Octopus, lionfish, scorpion fish, grouper, jack, butterfly fish, angelfish, boxfish, and many others can be spotted while diving.

 

The beautiful nudibranches are the favorite of many divers.
My personal favorites are all the various species of soft coral found on the southern coast of Jeju.
They come in orange, yellow, purple, blue and white. Sometimes they cover a whole wall, sometimes they stand alone as a mighty soft coral tree in the blue water.

The small rocky islets off Sogwipo City are popular dive spots where we do many our dives. These islets are uninhabited and their vertical walls fall strait into the depths divers are looking for. Our name Big Blue 33 comes from the position of the islets, which lie on the 33rd parallel.

Islet Diving

We take a boat to one of the uninhabited islet off Sogwipo, build our base camp near one of the entry points and dive directly from the islet. The steep walls of the islets make it possible to descend right at the point of entry, tiresome surface swims are not necessary. Dives are guided by our staff. Between the dives we rest on the island and you can swim, snorkel or sunbath there. We bring drinking water and serve a light lunch. It is another great way to spend the day. Just make sure to bring your sun block and a hat. These trips are 2 tank dives, too but a third dive is possible on request. Departure is between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. and return to the dive shop around 3 p.m..

 

Munsom is the most popular of the islets and offers three main entry points. One is located on Little Munsom and the other two on Munsom itself. The waters here are between 8 and 40 meters deep and show a rich marine life with various species of soft coral and a lot of fish. Diving the vertical wall on the north side of Little Munsom is a very special dive that requires good buoyancy control.
 
 

Supsom has two main entry points and a unique natural beauty with rocks and pine trees. There is less coral than in Munsom but the fish life is interesting. Large schools of squid have been spotted there and sometimes the dolphins come in for feeding. You just have to be lucky....

Pomsom has one main entry point but it s best attractions are the boat diving spots on the north and south side of the island. Again it s a rocky reef with beautiful soft coral and exiting fish.

Boat Diving

Boat dives can be arranged on request. We charter a boat at a given rate per hour and share the boat fees by the number of divers joining us. Most boat diving is done out of Sogwipo harbor. Please inquire for boat dives if you are interested in exploring Sogwipo waters from a boat.

 


In Jeju you can dive all year round. The water temperature on the southern coast of Jeju is about 3 degrees Celsius higher than in northern Jeju. The table shows water temperatures in Sogwipo.

We recommend 5 mm wetsuits for the summer and 7 mm wetsuits or dry suits for the cold season. Visibility is best in autumn and winter when it can reach 25 m. During the rest of the year it is often around 8-10 m.
 

Diving safety is our major concern, so we have established a few rules for the safety of our guests and the preservation of the marine environment we enjoy.
  • We do a briefing before every dive
  • We always dive in buddy teams
  • We ensure that every dive is guided by our staff
  • We do dives to a maximum depth of 40 m (130 feet)
  • We do only non-decompression dives
  • We finish every dive with a safety stop for 3-5 minutes in 5 meters
  • We ask all divers to respect and preserve the natural environment
  • We do not tolerate spear fishing or collecting
